What is Better than Charity?

Kind words and the covering of faults are better than CHARITY followed by injury. Allah is free of all wants, and He is Most-Forbearing.

Allah Tests Us

There lived a man who was a very good Muslim. He prayed all his five daily prayers, gave to charity and had good relations with his family and friends. The man was very happy and thought that because he was a good Muslim no harm will come to him.

Then one day, when the man returned home from a family outing, he discovered that someone had broken into his home and stolen all his precious belongings including his life's savings which he had safely hidden.

Devastated the man tried to control his disappointment in what had happened to him. With no money, he had become poor in an instant. He looked up at the sky and asked Allah, “Why me?! I pray! I fast! I give in charity! What did I do wrong?!”

Days went by and the man kept questioning why Allah had done this to him. And he couldn't remove his disappointment with Allah from his heart.

Friday came and the man prepared to go for Jumaah prayers. Reluctantly he took a shower and got dressed to leave for the Masjid. He left the house dejected and feeling very low. As he was walking, he decided to take a different route to the Masjid just to clear his mind.

As he strolled the new route, he looked at the new houses that had been built and realised how long it had been since he came this way. He started thinking about his childhood and how he and his friends would come and play at the grounds where now the new houses stood. Then he remembered an old neighbour he called 'uncle' and how kind he was to him and his friends. He started thinking about him and wondered if he still lived in that same house where he had spent his childhood.

He started to look around and there between the brand new luxury apartments was his old neighbour's little home. The house he once remembered as big and beautiful now seemed old, small and batted, its glory days were clearly gone. It needed a paint job and a whole lot of repairs. And there sitting on the front porch was a frail old man. Coming closer he noticed that his old neighbour was blind and seemed to be affected with many diseases all over his body. It was clear that he was wasting away. He was even paralyzed and forced to remain in a seated position. As he came closer he could hear the old man say,

“All praise is for Allah, Who has kept me safe from sickness with which He has tested many among His creation; and He has indeed preferred me over many among those that He created."

Hearing this the man exclaimed, “My dear uncle, how are you able to Praise Allah when you are affected with so many diseases? I don't think there is a disease which you do not have!”

The old neighbour replied,

"From Allah we have come and to Him we are to return. Do I not still have a tongue with which I can pronounce His Oneness, and with which I can remember Him every single moment? And do I not still have a heart with which I can know Him?"

Hearing this, the man fell silent and tears swelled in his eyes as he remembered the bounties that Allah had given him. And how Allah says,

And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sabirun (the patient).

Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: “Truly, to Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.”

They are those on whom are the Salawat (i.e. who are blessed and will be forgiven) from their Lord, and (they are those who) received His Mercy, and it is they who are the guided ones.

A Brother Like That

Shuaib received a car from his brother as an Eid present. On the day of Eid, Shuaib came out of his house, and saw a street kid was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it. "Is this your car, Sir?" he asked. Shuaib nodded. "My brother gave it to me for Eid." The boy was astounded.

"You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn't cost you nothing? Boy, I wish..." He hesitated. Of course Shuaib knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the lad said jarred Shuaib all the way down to his heels. "I wish," the boy went on, "that I could be a brother like that." Shuaib looked at the boy in astonishment, then impulsively he added, "Would you like to take a ride in my cart?" "Oh yes, I'd love that."

After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes aglow, said, "Sir, would you mind driving in front of my house?" Shuaib smiled a little. He thought he knew what the lad wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big car. But Shuaib was wrong again. "Will you stop where those two steps are?" the boy asked. He ran up the steps. Then in a little while Shuaib heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled brother. He sat him down on the bottom step, then sort of squeezed up against him and pointed to the car.

"There it is, little brother, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Eid and it didn't cost him a penny. And some day I'm gonna give you one just like it...then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in the Shop windows that I've been trying to tell you about."

Shuaib got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began a memorable ride. That Eid, Shuaib learned what Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) meant when he had said:

"None of you will have faith till he likes for his brother what he likes for himself.”

Regret

Once, a group of people were traveling on rocks at night. A voice came from the sky that whosoever picks up the rocks will regret and whosoever doesn't pick up the rocks will regret. Now, the people were confused. How can this be? Whether you pick up the rocks or not, you will regret!

Anyway, some people picked up the rocks and some didn't. In the morning when they reached their homes, they saw that the rocks turned into diamonds. Now, those people who didn't pick up the rocks started regretting saying "If only we had picked up some rocks." Those people who did pick some rocks also started regretting saying "Why didn't we pick up more rocks?" Both sides ended up regretting. Dear Muslims, this same incident will take place with us on the Day of Judgment. Those people who spent their time in useless things will start regretting by looking at those who achieved a great position in Paradise by spending their time in the way of Allah. Now, those who did achieve a position in Paradise will start regretting by looking at those who did more than them and are higher in status. "Alas! If we had only done more to please Allah."

A Pond Full of Milk

Once there was a king who told some of his workers to dig a pond. Once the pond was dug, the king made an announcement to his people saying that one person from each
household has to bring a glass of milk during the night and pour it into the pond.

So, the pond should be full of milk by the morning. After receiving the order, everyone went home.

One man prepared to take the milk during the night. He thought that since everyone will bring milk, he could just hide a glass of water and pour inside the pond. Because it will be dark at night, no one will notice. So he quickly went and poured the water in the pond and came back. In the morning, the king came to visit the pond and to his surprise the pond was only filled with water! What has happened is that everyone was thinking like the other man that “I don't have to put the milk, someone else will do it.”

Dear friends, when it comes to help the Religion of Allah, do not think that others will take care of it. Rather, it starts from you, if you don’t do it, no one else will do it. So, change yourself to the way of Allah to serve Him and that will make the difference.

Did You Thank Allah for Your Eyesight?

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said:
"I am blind, please help." There were only a few coins in the hat.

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, "Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?"

The man said, "I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way."

What he had written was: "Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it."

"It is He, Who has created for you (the sense of) hearing (ears), sight (eyes), and hearts (understanding). Little thanks you give."

[Surah Al-Mu'minun 23:78]

The Prophet used to offer night prayers till his feet became swollen. Somebody said, to him," "Allah has forgiven you, your faults of the past and those to follow." On that, he said, "Shouldn't I be a thankful slave of Allah?"

Our Prophet's Compassion Towards Children

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) kissed al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali when al-Aqra’ ibn Haabis al-Tameemi was sitting with him. Al-Aqra’ said: I have ten children and I have never kissed one of them. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The one who does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5651) and Muslim (2318).

It was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: A Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said: Do you kiss children? We do not kiss them. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “What can I do for you if Allaah has removed mercy from your heart?” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5652).

Our Prophet’s compassion towards children was so great that he would shorten the prayer because of their crying, out of compassion towards them and their mothers.

It was narrated from Anas ibn Maalik that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I start to pray intending to make it long, then I hear the crying of a child, so I make it short because of his mother’s distress.”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari (677) and Muslim (470).

"...smacking children and not showing compassion towards them is indicative of a lack of mercy in the heart of the one who does that, which is a sign of being deprived of the mercy of Allaah, may He be exalted." ~(islamqa)

What we can bear Allah knows

"Allah has tailor made the test for each and every one of us and none of us will be given something which we can’t bear. I am given something that I can bear and you are given something that YOU can bear. The tests won’t be the same for you and me. This is why suicide is the a great wrong because by suicide you’re basically declaring, ‘Oh Allah this is too much, I can’t take it anymore!’"
